When it comes to keeping your lithium-ion phosphate batteries in top shape, having a reliable battery management system (BMS) is crucial. At Muller Energy, we’ve just got our hands on the new JBD 12V 200A Smart BMS, and we’re here to break down the key differences compared to its predecessor.
For a detailed walkthrough, check out the YouTube video here. But if you’re after a quick summary, keep reading!
What’s New in the Updated JBD Smart BMS?
1. Recessed Bus Bars for Better Durability
The older version had solid copper bus bars that protruded from the unit, making them prone to being knocked around. The new design addresses this issue by recessing the bus bars and introducing a female thread, likely made of aluminium. This not only improves durability but also enhances ease of use.
While aluminium might have slightly higher resistance than copper, using larger spring terminals can minimise this impact. It’s a smart move for Australian battery setups where robustness matters.
2. Heating Pad Connector – Ready for Extreme Weather
One exciting new feature is the dedicated connector for heating pads. This is a game-changer for those living in colder climates where charging lithium-ion phosphate batteries below freezing can cause damage. The heating pads warm the cells to a safe temperature before charging. While not essential for most of Australia’s milder conditions, it’s a handy feature for anyone managing systems in chilly environments.
3. Improved Safety with Discharge Control Switch
Both versions feature a discharge control switch, which allows you to manually disable the BMS discharge. This is perfect for when you’re connecting an inverter or performing maintenance. The new model retains this feature, giving you added control and safety.
You can also manage discharge settings via the Bluetooth app—another useful tool for tech-savvy users. This setup provides convenience and peace of mind, whether you’re working on a caravan solar system, home battery setup, or other off-grid solutions.
4. Dual Temperature Sensors
Temperature monitoring is crucial for battery health, and both versions come equipped with two temperature sensors. These provide accurate readings, ensuring the system operates safely in all conditions.
5. Bluetooth Connectivity and Versatile Connectors
The Bluetooth module is easy to plug in, letting you monitor and control your system through a user-friendly app. Whether you need to track battery health, adjust settings, or connect to an external monitor or PC, the updated BMS offers seamless options.
6. Minor Design Tweaks – Screws and Heatsink Placement
One small downside in the new version is the non-recessed screws, which were countersunk in the older design for a sleeker finish. Additionally, the heatsink placement remains the same, located on the opposite side of the PCB from the switching MOSFETs, where most heat is generated. While this doesn’t appear to affect performance, it’s an area that could be refined in future revisions.
